Light up the Night – 2018

Summary of Light up the Night Project

In spring of 2018, I would try for a request for proposal for the Little Mekong Night Market. It was something I had never done before as an upcoming artist, so I didn’t know what to expect. After making through the panelist as a finalist, the concept was chosen to move forward with.

The materials chosen for the project were to withstand the elements.  It was made from Clear Acrylic, PVC,  and HDPE for the base. Everything was made using a hobby cnc machine and 3D printer and some hardware. Though the real feat was fabricating ten identical light fixtures.

That was when I took to small scale manufacturing. The steps I took was to make all the bases, the stems, and then the shade on top. Electrical work would be done closer to the completion of each light fixture to ensure everything ran properly.

After completing the project, the true task was setting it up at the Night Market. It was a difficult, but the team of volunteers made it more bearable. They carrier and drove the pieces to each site. I truly appreciate their help and understanding. Without them I believe it would have been in possible.

What I’ve learned from making this project, was how could I have made it even lighter? or the different materials for the bases. The reason what is because the bases were made of HDPE, which didn’t withstand the heat too well from the ground. It wasn’t enough to melt it, but it was enough to warp it enough to make one topple over.
