These wood carved Hmong necklaces are limited pieces in my A-Hmongst-Us collection and have a great sentimental value to me. To me, these necklaces represent the weight of the sacrificial love parents give so their children can have a good life and aren’t looked down upon. Hmong necklaces are called paug in Moob Leeg/Ntsuab (Leng/Green dialect) or xauv in Hmoob Dlawb (white dialect). Originally made with real silver, Hmong necklaces show the real glitz and glam of the Hmong world. It is typically worn with traditional Hmong clothing at weddings or Hmong New Year celebrations, though now a days you might see people wearing them in a more contemporary fashion.
Into the Process
This has been something I have been wanting to make since last year. It was an ongoing process to research and design what would work best for this project. it was a tough decision not to release anything that wasn’t final. I did show the progress as I worked, but the final was far from finished.
Tools
If you want great lines that are clean, I would go with a 30 degree V bit, which I have placed below. Amana Tool 45771-K Solid Carbide Spektra Extreme Tool Life Coated 30 Degree Engraving 0.005 Tip Width x 1/4 SHK x 2-1/4 Inch Long Signmaking Router Bithttps://amzn.to/2LSwx8W
I used a 1/8 down cut spiral bit to do the negative frame of the piece. This is a geometric outline that complimented the piece. Amana Tool 46200-K SC Spektra Extreme Tool Life Coated Spiral Plunge 1/8 Dia x 1/2 CH x 1/4 SHK 2 Inch Long Down-Cut Router Bit https://amzn.to/2LQliOc
For the boarder, I cut it down to a 60 degree v bit on the path and then cut it out with a 1/4 down cut bit. Amana Tool RC-1148 Insert V-Groove 60 Deg x 59/64 CH x 1/4 Inch SHK CNC Router Bit https://amzn.to/2RyHqBV
I do everything digitally first and then I hand finish everything by hand. It is a lot of work, but I like being part of the process. Especially when I am making something that is sentimental to me and my culture. I will always make it to the best of my ability and try to be consistent as possible.
I hope you enjoy the work that has been create. Please stay tune and follow me on instagram or facebook.
